The mission of the HSMC is to provide shelter, medical care and comfort to stray and surrendered dogs and cats while working to secure them appropriate homes, and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and the need for spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation.

The HSMC partners with the Madison County Correctional Institution to provide a dog training/foster care program. Handlers are responsible for the day-to-day care, teaching basic commands, and house and crate training.
